5th class Scoil Eoin send Christmas greetings to all our eTwinning partners. The greeting on our card is written in Irish a Celtic language.Nollaig Shona means Happy Christmas in Irish and the name of our school Scoil Eoin means the school of St. John.

Meet some Celts

In the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin you can see the remains of two actual Celts.They are called bog bodies as they were found in bogs. Forensic scientists and archaeologists say that they were murdered as part of human sacrifice which was a normal part of the Celtic rituals. The bog bodies have been preserved for over 2000 years due to the highly acidic water, low temperature and lack of oxygen in the bog. The skin was preserved although the bog helped to tan the skin.

This is an image of Clonycavan Man and has been dated to over 2,300 years ago.His hair is piled on top of his head with the help of a hair gel made from vegetable oil mixed with resin from pine trees found in Spain and the south-west of France. This may indicate that there was trade between the Celts of Spain and Ireland over 2000 years ago.

This is a close up of Old Croughan Man’s hand. His skin is well preserved and his well-manicured nails may indicate that he didn’t do any hard work during his lifetime.

Other items from the Celtic Era found in Ireland.

Torcs were decorative neck-rings. They were often made of beaten gold and showed that the people wearing them were of high status. Chieftains were often buried wearing them. Celtic gods were often shown wearing one torc and holding a second. This was a symbol of abundance.

The Celts used horses for transport and this is an example of a horse bit found in a bog.

Ogham Stones

Ogham was the ancient alphabet of the Celts. It is thought to have been invented in the southern Ireland, although examples have also been found in Wales and Cornwall. The ogham alphabet consists of a series of markings cut into the edges of standing stones. The letters are made of either straight or slanting lines. Each mark represents a letter of the ancient Irish alphabet. There are about 300 ogham stones in Ireland mainly in the south and south-west of the country.

Castrum celta

Lo¡os alumnos de 4º de Primaria del  Ceip. Ntra. Sra. de la Antigua han construido con plastilina su propio castro celta después de observar diversas fotografías sobre ellos.
Mientras lo construían han disfrutado mucho y se han divertido.

Next week we will have a Christmas function and our students prepare their actuations. These are us singing carols in English .
 

The magic of the Celtic Forests.

Three teachers from two different schools of Spain decided to go to look for an antique celtic settlement in the North of Extremadura.
We had to wake up early in the morning, at five am, and we drove toward a small village called "Casas del Castañar". At eight o´clock we were in the village. We had a quick coffee and we started the way.
At 1:00 pm,  we were able to  arrive to the  Celtic settlement. We were in the roof of the world and the way had been very hard but it was worth it.
When we returned to the village we found a Celtic festival. In the main Square, a man cooked  "Carbotes" (Celt people  did already  it thousand years ago) for all the the people  and a  music group  played Celt music. There was  a small Celt market in the Square, too. We can see goats and pigs which were typical Celt animals.
And the most wonderful and beautiful that we could see were the forests. There was magic inside those forests and we could imagine to   Druids celebrating  their magic events.
We decided to share with all of you our celtic  experience.

- Teresa Carballosa and Teresa Sánchez from "Nuestra Señora de la Antigua" school.

Our Celtic Cabin is finished.
Joel has enjoyed a lot making the roof. We had read that Celtic people used to build their houses what they found  around them so we went to the playground for looking for leaves, sticks, sand and small stones.

the youngest students from the school ( 4 years old) and their teacher Nuria have made plates, glasses and  jars with clay of different colors.

We have put a fire inside the cabin because it was  what Celtic people did in the past.

This is the result.

Chic@s vamos a construir un castro o poblado celta junto a nuestros socios europeos. Nosotros nos encargaremos de las viviendas. Para ello realizaremos chozas con el material que quiera cada grupo (arcilla, plastilina, paja...) 

Se elegirá la choza que nos represente entre todas las realizadas. 

Aquí os dejo un modelo de castro celta, muy bien conservado y restaurado, en el Monte de Santa Tecla en La Guarda (Pontevedra)

Asterix and Obelix

Building a Celttlic Cabin

It is time for building a Celtic house and we have already begun. the students from 6th grade were who started the work

  First we did some projects on paper.

This is the cabin that we will try to build for the project.

The students from 5th grade were doing their own projects. We love to read and we have met on the Asterix stories our inspiration.

We want to recycle the whole paper that we used so we have decided to congratulate  you the Christmas with them. In a few days you  will receive our  Christmas greeting.

Celtic Autumn

  I just find this event in the web and I would like to share with you. Casas del Castañar is a small  and beautiful village in the  North of Extremadura, our region.  On the 6th of December there will be a Celtic Celebration because it has got a deep celtic roots.

Otoño Celta (6 de diciembre en Casas del Castañar)

Casas del Castañar acogerá el día 6 de diciembre (sábado) una fiesta dedicada a la búsqueda de las raíces celtas del Valle del Jerte. 

Las actividades propuestas durante toda la mañana se realizarán en la Plaza San Juan, mientras que las de la tarde se desarrollarán en la Casa de Cultura de la localidad.

8:00 h: Ruta guiada al Castro Celta. Salida desde la Casa de Cultura.
De 11:00 a 16:00 h: Mercado Celta. Venta exclusiva de artesanía en madera, piedra y metales.
12:30 h: Gran calbotada. Música en directo durante toda la mañana a cargo de grupos de música celta.
17:00 h: Conferencia "Celtas en el Valle del Jerte-Extremadura"
De 16:00 a 19:00 h: Apertura de la exposición "Reminiscencias Celtas" en el Museo Sayans.
